I just got a second hatch from my Black Sumatras large fowl. The parents are only 8 months old. I got six out of the 16 eggs set. This amazes me. Never would have thought the roosters would be fertile at that young age, but they are.

Travis Akehurst and his dad, Keith, have LF sumatras in Oklahoma. And, Terry Britt also, who you mentioned, Twisted Feather Farms were where perhaps yours are at least partially from- is also in Oklahoma. That would be a closer drive for you than Indiana or Ohio.

Thanks Doug. I am in Arkansas so not sure that I will be able to make Lucasville, eventhough I would really like to. Finding good, reputable breeders in my area has been quite difficult, but I wont give up. All else fails, I will resort to having birds shipped.

What state are you in? The Sumatra National will be Memorial Weekend in Lucasville, Ohio. Over 100 sumatras will be there. It would be a good place to purchase adult birds.

Also, I'll be able to take hatching eggs or chicks to shows I'm attending in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana over the next two months. I have black sumatra large fowl.

Ok, Thanks for the info. That explains why my blues are three different colors. All my birds are from two different hatcherys. The blacks are 3 months old and my blues are 4 weeks. All are doing fine.I won't be doing any breeding for awhile due to there age. I wasn't planning on breeding any of the blacks to the blues as i wanted to keep them pure, but maby that's the way to go. What would two white sums get you? Is it possible to get white sums from breeding the white ones to each other?

Blue is a ressessive gene... when you mate 2 blues, the chciks will come out "black" or "blue" or "splash", but all will carry the gene for blue..... when you cross a black onto the splash, you will get blue chicks....

Hi, I'm new here. I am raiseing 28 sums from chicks at the moment. 14 of them are the blue and i was wandering why they are different colors. My black sums were all the same color. Why is that? Are the blues not perfected yet or something? I have 3 that are almost pure white.

I am relatively new to the breed, but working on getting a good breeding program going. I currently have 2 Blue cocks, 3 black cocks, 1 splash cockerel, 1 blue hen, 1 black hen, and 1 black pullet.

One of the black cocks will be used, the others are in the process of being re-homed, as they do not possess the traits that I will be selecting for. The females that I will be using come from three different lines (or at least this is what I have been told)--Schock, Twisted Feather Farms, and the Memphis zoo.

I would like to find another decent male and a few more hens in order to be able to properly start a good program with a variance in blood. If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to post them.
