Ask me a question about rabbit color genetics and I'm a whiz but birds ???  It's simple black/blue (dominant full color/recessive dilute) we're dealing with here but I need a little help to jumpstart my brain when it comes to some chicks that were recently hatched.

My husband purchased a pair of black Sumatras this winter.  Their first offspring was a black/white fuzzball and is feathering out black with great color on legs.  The rest have had a higher % of white fuzz at hatch and are developing white feathering on their wings.  The % of black on their legs at hatch has decreased with each succesive chick.

Is my husband getting a bunch of unshowables, poor specimens, or sports?  Will someone please explain basic color genetics of the Sumatra and how these white feathers, and legs with little black, fit into the picture, please?  Thank you much.

When I started with Sumatras in the 70's I was sure the offspring were mixed ,,but  black and white is the way sumatra chicks are hatched and the white will leave.. good luck with them ,, one of the prettiest birds..  connerhills farm

George is correct.  Some sumatra chicks have more white down than others.  It doesn't mean anything as adults; some even say that the whiter the chicks the more glossy black the adult.  Don't be concerned with those white wings feathers of the chicks either; all black sumatras have them, the adult wing feathers will be black.

Okay, adolescent feathering was an after thought I had after I posted.  I'm happy to hear this is what we're seeing.  :)   And, I suspect the legs will become black with time, as well, correct?  We sure are enjoying these beauties.

Yes, it takes awhile for the legs, feet and toes to become all black, too.
